Wallpaper Calculator

Estimate wallpaper rolls needed for a room by perimeter, height, doors, windows, roll dimensions, and pattern repeat.

Formula & Explanation

Wallpaper calculation accounts for room dimensions, roll dimensions, and pattern repeat waste. Step 1: Calculate number of vertical strips needed - Strip height = Wall height (adjusted for pattern repeat if applicable) - Number of strips = Ceiling(Perimeter ÷ Roll width in feet) Step 2: Calculate strips per roll - Strips per roll = Floor(Roll length ÷ Strip height) Step 3: Calculate rolls needed - Rolls needed = Ceiling(Number of strips ÷ Strips per roll) Pattern repeat increases strip height, reducing efficiency. A large repeat (e.g., 24 inches) may require significantly more rolls. Example (no pattern): - Perimeter: 40 ft, Height: 8 ft, Roll: 27" × 30' - Strip height: 8 ft - Strips needed: ceil(40 ÷ 2.25) = 18 strips - Strips per roll: floor(30 ÷ 8) = 3 strips per roll - Rolls needed: ceil(18 ÷ 3) = 6 rolls

Assumptions

  • Standard wallpaper rolls are 27 inches wide and 30 feet long (varies by manufacturer)
  • Pattern repeat increases effective strip height and waste; larger repeats require more rolls
  • Calculations do not heavily deduct for doors and windows (reduce perimeter manually if desired)
  • Assumes professional installation; DIY may require additional waste
  • Wall height is consistent (no vaulted ceilings)
  • Wallpaper is hung floor-to-ceiling (not wainscoting or chair rail)
  • Roll coverage varies by brand; this calculator uses roll dimensions as primary input
  • Typical wallpaper cost: $30-$100+ per roll depending on pattern and quality

Example Calculation

40 ft perimeter, 8 ft height, 27" wide × 30 ft long rolls with no pattern repeat requires 6 rolls. At $50/roll, total estimated cost is $300.
