Paint Coverage Calculator

Calculate how far your paint will go by entering gallons available, coverage rate, and number of coats.

Formula & Explanation

This is the inverse of the standard paint estimator-instead of "How much paint do I need?", it answers "How far does my paint go?" Formula: Total coverage (sqft) = Gallons × Coverage per gallon When applying multiple coats: - Coverage per coat = Total coverage ÷ Number of coats Example: 1 gallon at 400 sqft/gallon with 2 coats covers: - Total: 1 × 400 = 400 sqft - Per coat: 400 ÷ 2 = 200 sqft This means you can cover a 200 sqft area with 2 full coats, or a 400 sqft area with 1 coat.

Assumptions

  • Coverage per gallon is from the paint can label and applies to smooth drywall
  • Coverage rates vary by paint type (interior latex 350-400, exterior 300-350, primer 250-300)
  • Textured or porous surfaces (stucco, masonry, rough drywall) may reduce coverage by 25-50%
  • Coverage assumes one-directional application without heavy overspray or significant drips
  • Multiple coats divide total coverage equally
  • Coverage assumes normal room temperature and humidity (50-85°F, <85% humidity)

Example Calculation

2 gallons of paint at 400 sqft/gallon coverage with 1 coat covers 800 square feet. With 2 coats, the same 2 gallons covers 400 square feet.
