Mortar Calculator
Calculate the amount of mortar (bags and weight) needed for masonry work. Account for wall area, joint thickness, and unit type.
Formula & Explanation
The mortar calculator estimates how much mortar is needed for a masonry wall based on wall area and joint thickness. **Bags Needed** = wall area (sq ft) ÷ coverage per bag, adjusted for joint thickness **Total Mortar (lbs)** = bags needed × 50 lbs/bag **Waste Estimate** = bags needed × 15% (industry standard) **Total Bags with Waste** = bags needed + waste estimate Mortar yield depends on joint thickness and unit type (bricks vs. blocks): - Standard brick (7.5 units per 50-lb bag) with 3/8" joints - Standard block (3.5 units per 50-lb bag) with 3/8" joints - Thicker joints require more mortar per unit The calculator adjusts for joint thickness: thicker joints require proportionally more mortar. Waste (15%) accounts for spillage, uneven application, temperature effects, and site conditions.
Assumptions
- •Standard mortar coverage: ~7.5 bricks or ~3.5 concrete blocks per 50-lb bag with 3/8" joints
- •Coverage assumes standard 3/8" (0.375") mortar joints
- •Thicker joints (1/2") increase mortar consumption; thinner joints (1/4") decrease it
- •Waste factor of 15% accounts for spillage, overlapping, weather exposure, and uneven application
- •Coverage varies with masonry unit type, porosity, application technique, and site conditions
- •High-temperature conditions may increase water loss and reduce coverage
- •Highly porous units may absorb more water, affecting actual mortar yield
- •No deductions for windows, doors, or openings (calculate separately)
Example Calculation
A 100 sq ft brick wall with standard 3/8" mortar joints requires approximately 14 bags of mortar. With 15% waste factor, plan to buy 16 bags (800 lbs total).
