Brick Calculator
Calculate the number of bricks and mortar bags needed for a brick wall. Specify wall dimensions and brick size.
Formula & Explanation
The brick calculator determines how many bricks and mortar bags are needed for a wall. **Wall Area** = height (ft) × length (ft) **Brick Face Area** = brick length (in) × brick height (in) **Number of Bricks** = wall area (sq in) ÷ brick face area (sq in), rounded up **Mortar Bags Estimate** = number of bricks ÷ 7.5 (standard industry ratio: ~7.5 bricks per 50-lb bag) The mortar joint (typically 3/8") is part of the effective unit spacing. The calculator divides total wall area by individual brick face area to estimate brick count. Mortar yield varies with joint thickness and application technique-the 7.5 bricks/bag ratio assumes standard 3/8" joints and standard grouting. Adjust based on your site conditions.
Assumptions
- •Standard US brick dimensions: 3.625" long × 2.25" high (nominal face size)
- •Standard mortar joint thickness: 3/8" (0.375")
- •One 50-lb bag of mortar yields approximately 75-80 bricks with standard 3/8" joints (calculator uses 7.5 bricks/bag conservative estimate)
- •Wall is assumed to be single wythe (single layer); double-wythe walls require doubling the brick count
- •No deductions for windows, doors, or openings (estimate separately and subtract)
- •Mortar yield depends on joint thickness, technique, and weather conditions
- •Estimations may vary with actual site conditions, waste, and craftsmanship
Example Calculation
A 10×10 foot wall (100 sq ft) requires approximately 728 standard bricks and 97 bags of 50-lb mortar, assuming standard 3.625×2.25" brick with 3/8" mortar joints.
