Formula & Explanation

This calculator estimates the total studs required to frame all walls in a room. **Base Studs** = floor(Perimeter in inches ÷ Spacing in inches) **Total Studs** = Base Studs + Corner Studs + Opening Studs The base count assumes studs placed at regular intervals around the entire perimeter. Corner studs (typically 4 for a rectangular room) and opening studs for doors and windows are added separately. Example: A 40 ft perimeter at 16" o.c.: - Base: floor(480 ÷ 16) = 30 - Corners: +4 - Total: 34 studs (plus additional studs if there are openings)

Assumptions

  • Corner studs: 4 for a rectangular room (3 studs per corner, some shared)
  • Opening allowance: 3-5 additional studs per door or window (for framing headers and jambs)
  • Standard 16" o.c. spacing is typical for residential; 24" o.c. is common in commercial or low-load conditions
  • Does NOT include top plates, bottom plates, blocking, bridging, or bracing-add those separately
  • Assumes all walls are interior at uniform height (does not account for sloped ceilings or split levels)

Example Calculation

A 10×10 ft room (40 ft perimeter) at 16" o.c. with 4 corners and openings for one door and one window requires 40 studs total.
