Paver Calculator
Calculate how many pavers you need for patios, walkways, driveways, and other hardscaping projects.
Formula & Explanation
The paver calculator uses the following formula: 1. Paver area (sqft) = (Width (in) × Length (in)) ÷ 144 2. Number of pavers = ceil(Total area (sqft) ÷ Paver area (sqft)) This gives you the number of individual pavers needed to cover your space. Always order 10% extra for cutting, breakage, and future repairs.
Assumptions
- •Calculation assumes square or rectangular pavers laid in a standard pattern
- •Does not account for cuts at edges or around obstacles-order extra for these
- •A 10% waste factor is recommended for breakage and cuts, though this varies by pattern complexity
- •Grout/joint spacing is not factored in; it is typically negligible (1/8" to 1/4")
- •Common paver sizes: 12×12 in (1 sqft), 12×24 in (2 sqft), 18×18 in (2.25 sqft), 18×36 in (4.5 sqft)
- •Installation pattern (running bond, herringbone, basket weave) may affect total needed; this calculator assumes simple grid layout
Example Calculation
A 100 square foot patio with 12×12 inch pavers requires exactly 100 pavers (plus extras for waste and cuts).
