Gravel Calculator

Calculate the volume and quantity of gravel or stone needed for driveways, pathways, and landscaping projects.

Formula & Explanation

The gravel calculator determines the volume, quantity, and weight of gravel needed for your project. **Step 1: Calculate Volume in Cubic Feet** Volume (cu ft) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 12 Example: 200 sq ft area × 4 inches deep ÷ 12 = 66.67 cubic feet **Step 2: Convert to Cubic Yards** Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27 Example: 66.67 cu ft ÷ 27 = 2.47 cubic yards **Step 3: Calculate Number of Bags** Bags Needed = ceiling(Volume (cu ft) ÷ Bag size (cu ft)) Example: 66.67 cu ft ÷ 3 cu ft per bag = 22.2, round up to 23 bags **Step 4: Calculate Weight** Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × Density (lb/cu yd) ÷ 2000 Example: 2.47 cu yd × 1500 lb/cu yd ÷ 2000 = 1.85 tons **Important:** Density varies significantly by material type (pea gravel, crushed stone, jersey shore) and moisture content. Always verify density with your supplier for accurate weight estimates.

Assumptions

  • Gravel depth for driveways should be at least 4-6 inches for proper drainage and durability
  • Pea gravel typically weighs 1400-1500 lb per cubic yard; crushed stone ranges from 1400-1600 lb/cy
  • Density varies by material type, moisture content, and compaction level-verify with your supplier
  • Calculation assumes properly compacted gravel; loose gravel may require additional material
  • Crushed stone is better for driveways; pea gravel is better for decorative and walking areas

Example Calculation

A 200 square foot driveway at 4 inches deep requires approximately 1.85 cubic yards (17 bags) or 1.39 tons of gravel.
