Paint Cost Calculator

Calculate total paint project cost by combining paint material, labor, waste, and tax.

Formula & Explanation

This calculator breaks down painting project costs into material, labor, waste, and tax components. Material Cost = Gallons needed × Price per gallon Waste Cost = Material cost × (Waste % ÷ 100) Labor Cost = Labor hours × Hourly rate Subtotal = Material cost + Waste cost + Labor cost Tax = Subtotal × (Tax % ÷ 100) Total = Subtotal + Tax Example: - Paint: 2 gal × $40/gal = $80 - Waste: $80 × 10% = $8 - Labor: 8 hours × $50/hour = $400 - Subtotal: $80 + $8 + $400 = $488 - Tax: $488 × 8% = $39.04 - Total: $488 + $39.04 = $527.04

Assumptions

  • Paint price varies by type (interior latex $25-$60/gal, premium exterior $60+)
  • Labor is DIY or professional; professional rates typically $35-$75/hour depending on region
  • Waste percentage accounts for spillage, brush cleanup, and unused paint; typical 5-15%
  • Sales tax applies to paint and materials but not labor (varies by jurisdiction)
  • Does not include primer cost; calculate separately if needed
  • Labor hours estimate: smooth interior 150-300 sqft/hour, exterior/textured 100-200 sqft/hour
  • Does not include equipment rental (ladders, scaffolding, sprayers)

Example Calculation

2 gallons of $40/gal paint plus 8 hours at $50/hr labor, with 10% waste and 8% tax, totals $527.04.
