Grass Seed Calculator
Calculate how much grass seed you need for new lawn establishment or overseeding based on area and seed rate.
Formula & Explanation
The grass seed calculator uses the following formula: Seed weight (lbs) = Area (sqft) ÷ 1000 × Seeding rate (lb per 1000 sqft) The seeding rate depends on whether you are establishing a new lawn or overseeding an existing lawn. Most grass seed bags specify the recommended rate for your region and grass type.
Assumptions
- •New lawn establishment typically requires 4-6 lb of seed per 1000 sqft depending on species and quality
- •Overseeding (adding seed to thin existing lawn) typically requires 2-4 lb per 1000 sqft
- •Seeding rates vary by grass type: cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass) differ from warm-season (Bermuda, zoysia)
- •Always follow the seeding rate recommended on the seed bag-it is tested for that specific variety
- •Seeding rates account for germination percentage and typical growth expectations
- •Higher rates improve establishment but waste seed and money; lower rates may result in thin, weedy lawn
Example Calculation
A 5000 square foot lawn with a 5 lb per 1000 square feet seeding rate requires 25 pounds of grass seed.
