Hip Roof Calculator
Calculate materials for hip roofs including roof area, ridge length, and waste adjustments.
Formula & Explanation
Hip roofs slope on all four sides (no vertical gable ends). Material calculations account for the complex geometry: Roof Area = Footprint × [1 / cos(pitch angle)] Ridge Length ≈ [(Length + Width) ÷ 2] × 0.7 The ridge length is approximate because hip roofs have more complex geometry than gable roofs. The ridge is shorter and more central. Squares Needed = ceil(Roof Area × 1.10 ÷ 100) The 10% waste factor accounts for extra cutting and overlap required at hips and valleys. Example: 40 × 30 ft building, 6:12 pitch - Area = 1200 sq ft footprint - Roof area ≈ 1342 sq ft (after pitch adjustment) - Squares ≈ 15 (including 10% waste for hips)
Assumptions
- •Hip roofs have four sloping sides (no vertical gables)
- •Ridge line runs along the shorter diagonal of the building
- •Ridge length calculation is approximate; complex roofs may vary
- •Waste factor of 10% accounts for hip and valley complexity
- •Does not include valleys, dormers, or other complex features
- •Actual materials may vary based on specific roof design
Example Calculation
A 40×30 ft hip roof with 6:12 pitch requires approximately 15 squares of materials.
