Formula & Explanation
This calculator works with any flooring material sold by the box or carton. It uses a simple coverage-based approach: 1. Calculate room area: Area = Length × Width (in square feet) 2. Apply waste factor: Area with Waste = Area × (1 + Waste Factor) 3. Calculate boxes needed: Boxes = Ceiling(Area with Waste ÷ Coverage Per Box) The coverage per box varies by product and must be obtained from the product packaging or seller. Common examples: - Ceramic tiles: 10-15 sqft per box - Laminate planks: 20-40 sqft per box - Vinyl plank (LVP): 20-30 sqft per box - Engineered hardwood: 20-30 sqft per box
Assumptions
- •Room is rectangular with perpendicular walls
- •Measurements are in feet
- •Coverage per box is constant across all boxes (no variation in density or thickness)
- •Waste factor percentage is applied uniformly across the project
- •Typical waste factor: 10% for simple straight patterns, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns
- •Result is rounded up since you cannot purchase partial boxes
- •Coverage per box is a product-specific value and must be verified from the manufacturer
- •This calculator does not account for complex room shapes, alcoves, or obstacles
- •Seam optimization for sheet materials is not calculated; it is handled by the installer
Example Calculation
A 12ft × 10ft room (120 sqft) needs 3 boxes of flooring that covers 40 sqft each. With 10% waste for cuts and breakage (132 sqft total), purchase 4 boxes.
