Concrete Wall Calculator
Calculate concrete volume for concrete walls, retaining walls, and foundation walls.
Formula & Explanation
A rectangular wall volume is calculated using: Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Height (ft) × Thickness (ft) The thickness must be converted from inches to feet by dividing by 12. For example, an 8-inch thickness equals 8/12 = 0.667 feet. Length and height are entered in feet. To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27. The number of bags depends on the concrete yield (typically 0.45 cu ft for 60 lb bags, 0.60 cu ft for 80 lb bags). A waste percentage (typically 10%) accounts for spillage and material loss. Final bags = ceil(Volume × (1 + Waste%) ÷ Bag Yield)
Assumptions
- •The wall is rectangular with uniform thickness and height
- •Thickness is entered in inches; length and height in feet
- •The calculation assumes a solid wall (not hollow or insulated)
- •Bag yield values are industry standards-confirm with your product
- •A 10% waste allowance is typical; increase to 15% for complex forms
Example Calculation
A 50 ft long retaining wall, 6 feet tall and 12 inches thick, requires 300 cubic feet of concrete. With 10% waste and 60 lb bags, you need approximately 742 bags.
