Formula & Explanation

Concrete steps are calculated by summing the volume of each individual step, treated as a rectangular prism: Volume per Step (cu ft) = (Rise × Run × Width) / 144 Where rise and run are in inches and width is in feet. The denominator 144 converts (inches² × feet) to cubic feet. Total Volume = Volume per Step × Number of Steps To convert to cubic yards, divide by 27. A waste percentage (typically 10%) is added for spillage and material loss. Final bags = ceil(Total Volume × (1 + Waste%) ÷ Bag Yield)

  • Each step is a uniform rectangular prism (simplified model)
  • Rise and run are entered in inches; width in feet
  • The calculation assumes open-riser stairs (no stringers filling side gaps)
  • All steps have identical dimensions
  • Bag yield values are industry standards-confirm with your product

Example Calculation

Three concrete steps, each 7 inches high and 11 inches deep, spanning 3 feet wide, require 4.81 cubic feet of concrete. With 10% waste and 60 lb bags, you need 13 bags.
